The company is widely recognized in the region for its customized services and expertise in producing unconventional lumber sizes that are not typically available in hardware stores.<\/p>\n How Did the Succession Opportunity Come About?<\/strong><\/p>\n Originally from Baie-des-Sables and St-L\u00e9andre in the Matanie region, Isabelle and Jean-Fran\u00e7ois had been operating a sawmill for several years. They were searching for a new venture that would allow them to establish themselves for the long term.<\/p>\n Their opportunity came when Jean-Fran\u00e7ois discovered an advertisement for the sale of Scierie Avignon on the Mon entreprise \u00e0 vendre<\/em> website. He reached out to the owner, Mr. Richard Leblanc.<\/p>\n \u201cI spoke with Richard, and he hadn\u2019t yet found buyers who matched his vision. He wanted someone who would continue serving local customers and prioritize local purchasing,\u201d explains Jean-Fran\u00e7ois. Sensitive to Mr. Leblanc\u2019s wishes and determined to demonstrate that they were the buyers he was looking for, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois and Isabelle decided to get involved first-hand in the business.<\/p>\n They began working two days a week with Mr. Leblanc. This hands-on approach and perseverance helped establish trust before finalizing the sale in the winter of 2024. \u00a0\u201cDuring that time, we got to know each other. Richard saw that we had the experience and the potential to take over the business,\u201d Jean-Fran\u00e7ois recalls.<\/p>\n What Sets Scierie Avignon Apart?<\/strong><\/p>\n Scierie Avignon\u2019s reputation is built on the human and community-focused approach instilled by Mr. Leblanc.<\/p>\n The sawmill is open to the public several times a week, fostering direct relationships with the community. Isabelle and Jean-Fran\u00e7ois have made it a priority to maintain these connections, starting by keeping the well-established company name.<\/p>\n They have also continued promoting products made from locally sourced wood. \u201cWhat makes us unique is our ability to create projects that highlight the resources of the Plateaux region,\u201d Jean-Fran\u00e7ois shares.<\/p>\n Improvements and Future Plans<\/strong><\/p>\n Since taking over, Isabelle and Jean-Fran\u00e7ois have made several adjustments to enhance the sawmill\u2019s operations. These include upgrading equipment, redesigning the interior, and winterizing the building to improve working conditions.<\/p>\n In their commitment to sustainability, they also introduced measures to optimize resource use. For instance, they converted a piece of machinery to electric power and added a woodchipper.<\/p>\n \u201cOne of our best decisions was adding the chipper. It allows us to transform all our wood trimmings into biomass,\u201d explains Jean-Fran\u00e7ois.<\/p>\n Looking ahead, the couple aims to expand the sawmill\u2019s reach beyond the region while staying true to their human-scale and community-focused approach.<\/p>\n The Role of SADC Support<\/strong><\/p>\n The couple received financial support from the SADC\u2019s Investment Fund<\/em>, which played a crucial role in helping them secure the sawmill.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat I appreciated was the strong communication between the SADC and the MRC. We didn\u2019t have to repeat the process\u2014it was seamless,\u201d says Jean-Fran\u00e7ois.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong>Advice for Future Entrepreneurs<\/strong><\/p>\n Jean-Fran\u00e7ois and Isabelle credit their success to seeking guidance and support throughout the transfer process.<\/p>\n \u201cYou need an external perspective,\u201d they emphasize. \u201cWe often get so focused on the end goal\u2014like the business plan or financial package\u2014that we overlook the importance of having someone to help us step back and reflect.\u201d<\/p>\n Their story is a testament to the human connections that underpin every successful succession project.<\/p>\n About Isabelle Beaulieu and Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Chouinard<\/strong><\/p>\n He, a former sports instructor and she an agriculturalist, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois and Isabelle gradually developed a passion for forestry and wood processing.
